Frequency: Twice a month Special issues: "Emerging Scholars" (January), "Technology" (March), "Student-athletes" (April), "Careers" (November) Background: In 1984, civil rights activists and scholars William E. Cox and Frank L. Matthews launched Black Issues in Higher Education, a publication designed to give African-Americans and other ethnic minorities a voice. In 2005, the publication was re-named Diverse: Issues in Higher Education to reflect issues of all minorities. Diverse readers are primarily university presidents, deans, professors and students. The pub tackles issues including admissions, affirmative action, minority faculty hiring and retention and financial aid. "Our content has been relatively consistent in the subject areas Diverse has covered over the years," says senior editor Ronald Roach. "We have, however, increased the coverage of international issues, including topics in international education for U.S. students, foreign students in the U.S., and U.S. higher education competitiveness." Roach says that the magazine's readers respond enthusiastically to op-ed and commentary articles by higher education professionals on diversity-related subjects. ... ![]() The How to Pitch series is worth its weight in gold.
