One way to write a good profile is to flat-out lie. It worked, at least for a little while, for Clifford Irving, whose attempt to co-write a faux autobiography on Howard Hughes recently came to the big screen in The Hoax. Fortunately, there are more honest ways to write a readable, probing profile.
