Background: Legendary Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Helen Gurley Brown wrote the revolutionary bestseller Sex and the Single Girl in 1962. She was an outspoken advocate of sexual freedom in the 1960s, and her magazine served as a guide for liberated, single women -- sometimes referred to as "Cosmo Girls." Brown, who still enters the Hearst building daily for work, created the "go on, girl" tone Cosmo strikes today.
