Background: Born into the family of magazines launched by media legend John H. Johnson, JET began in 1951 as the authority on breaking information in the black community. Representing a gamut of interests from sports and politics to lifestyle and fashion, it serves as a sort of print ticker for news directly about or interesting to African-Americans, tapping into the stories everyone is talking about at the barber shop, the grocery store checkout line or the let-out after church. JET's content should neither be confused nor compared with what's happening on the pages of recently redesigned sister publication Ebony, however. Each mag serves a different and distinct purpose in the black media canon.
