Good Afternoon, America; New Republic Reclaims Editor

May 22, 2012
Good Morning, America! Now in the afternoon. ABC hands Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer the keys to an early afternoon version of Good Morning America. It gets a nine-week run in the summer but could become permanent and possibly a lead-in for Katie Couric's new show. Will the program focus on news? Nope. Expect more pop culture, original entertainment and various other light fare. (What the world needs now is another Kim Kardashian feature.) Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Sam Champion are scheduled to guest star on the 2 p.m. show...

The New Republic's new owner Chris Hughes brings back an old hand, tapping Franklin Foer as editor. He replaces Richard Just, the man who replaced Foer after he left in 2010 (Symmetry!). Hughes also detailed some big plans for the publication, saying he plans to bring in big-name writers and keep them there for the long haul. He will double the editorial staff to 30... The New York Times will lose public editor Arthur Brisbane in September. The timing comes as his two-year contract expires, although he did have an option for a third that both he and the paper's editors needed to agree on. Brisbane says the decision to leave was his, despite some obvious and embarrassing missteps. Let the speculation about the next NYT watchdog begin... Doug Frantz joins the Washington Post as national security editor. He had been consulting with Kroll but previously served as managing editor and investigative reporter at the Los Angeles Times...

Arianna Huffington plans to make waves in the streaming world, hiring Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, Alicia Menendez and Marc Lamont Hill to anchor the Huffington Post Streaming Network. No one knows what this thing will look like, but everyone is very excited... Amy Robach leaves the Today show and NBC. She had been co-anchor of the Saturday show since 2007 and will join ABC News... Phil Schoen leaves GOL TV. He will join Al Jazeera to comment on Spanish League soccer games...

NPR taps Brian Boyer to head a news apps team. He had been in the same position at the Chicago Tribune. He needs a few more staffers to fill out the team, as evidenced by Boyer's amazing job descriptions. ("We believe in freedom through tyranny.")... David White takes on the role of executive director at SAG-AFTRA. He had been the SAG executive director when the two organizations merged... And there are changes at Seventeen, Harper's Bazaar and more...
