Background: In 1984, civil rights activists and scholars William E. Cox and Frank L. Matthews launched Black Issues in Higher Education, a publication designed to give African-Americans and other ethnic minorities a voice in academe. In 2005, the publication was re-named Diverse: Issues in Higher Education to reflect issues of all underrepresented groups. Diverse readers are primarily university presidents, deans, professors and students. The pub tackles issues including admissions, affirmative action, minority faculty hiring and retention and financial aid.

"We have, however, increased the coverage of international issues, including topics in international education for U.S. students, foreign students in the U.S. and U.S. higher education competitiveness." Roach said that the magazine's readers respond enthusiastically to op-ed and commentary articles by higher education professionals on diversity-related subjects.
