Frank Bruni lands himself a new gig at The New York Times. The former chief restaurant critic had been hanging out as writer-at-large at the weekly magazine, but he is moving to the op-ed page. The plan calls for Bruni to anchor the revamped Sunday "Week in Review" section headed by opinion pages editor Andrew Rosenthal. Bruni will also pen a weekly column in the paper, probably on Thursdays. NYT brass won't say he is replacing anyone -- and technically they are correct -- but there's a gaping hole in the op-ed lineup left by the departure of Frank Rich and Bob Herbert...
WSJ. Magazine hires Michael Caruso as deputy editor. He owned the top jobs at Details and Men's Journal before moving to an editor-at-large role with the ill-fated Portfolio... Tina Brown recruits Simon Schama as a contributor. He'll stay at The New Yorker as well, although the frequency of his articles will decrease... Amanda Hess escapes TBD.com for GOOD's California office...
Newsday gives raises to its managers less than a year after union members took five and 10 percent pay cuts... The Sacramento Bee lays off 44, including nine in the newsroom. The paper has cut 400 jobs over the past three years... Roll Call reorganizes its copy and design desks, promoting Emily Ortman to copy desk chief and Blake Whitney to deputy design director...
