Observer Goes National; American Idol Gets New Chief

December 23, 2011
The New York Observer is going national. While the print product will remain New York-centric, the increasingly excellent website will broaden its scope beyond Gotham by ramping up the editorial staff. Traffic is up 80 percent -- to 1.6 million unique visitors per month -- since Elizabeth Spiers joined as editor-in-chief, a jump that encouraged boss Jared Kushner to increase her editorial budget by 25 percent. Capital New York's Joe Pompeo, a former NYOer himself, writes that the publication attempted to go wider at two previous times but failed. Spiers, however, should have better success...

Janet Robinson, the outgoing New York Times Co. CEO, makes more than $15 million as her exit package. The newspaper guild is angry partially (and understandably), because the company's stock price dropped 80 percent over her seven-year tenure... The Los Angeles Times rehires former Los Angeles Times Magazine editor Drex Heikes for a stint to help the staff. The paper also recruits Chris Megerian for its Sacramento bureau... The Deseret News promotes a host of staffers, including a new national editor and publisher...

It looks like Marc Graboff is set to take over American Idol parent company CKX. The former NBC man, who left his job as the Peacock's head of West Coast operations in November, replaces Michael Ferrel... Russ Mitchell departs his gig as weekend anchor of CBS Evening News and The Early Show to join Cleveland's NBC affiliate, WKYC, as managing editor of evening news and lead nighttime anchor... Paula Faris officially leaves an NBC affiliate in Chicago for ABC. She will join World News Now and America This Morning as co-anchor... CBS taps a new senior broadcast producer and seven senior producers for CBS This Morning...

W loses associate publisher Susan Keena to the same position at Architectural Digest... Hearst taps Next Issue Media's Deede Dickson as VP of business development for its consumer marketing group... Dwell executive editor Amanda Dameron gets bumped up to editor-in-chief. Meanwhile, art director Alejandro Chavetta becomes creative director there... Syracuse alumna Lauren Rae Bertolini leaves NBC for Gawker, where she'll be social media manager... Slate senior editor Chris Wilson says goodbye, jumping to Yahoo News... And there are changes at Blaze, Whole Living, and more...
