The information in this article is current and accurate.
Circulation: 20,000
Frequency: Quarterly
Special issues: Summer 2013 will focus on mothers with teenage children; other special issues to come.
Background: The brainchild of Jennifer Niesslein and Stephanie Wilkinson, Brain, Child spent more than a decade growing under the nurturing care of its founders. Perhaps the only publication of its kind, the literary magazine focuses on issues relating to women and motherhood, offering a cerebral experience rather than service and instructional articles typically found in parenting mags. When Brain, Child launched in 2000, Utne Reader christened it one of the best new magazines in the country. The accolades kept coming with more Utne awards, a notable mention in Best American Essays 2002 and a 2003 Pushcart Prize.
When Niesslein and Wilkinson decided to cease publication of the print magazine in early 2012, longtime subscriber, writing teacher and author Marcelle Soviero saw an opportunity. "It was always my favorite magazine," said the new editor-in-chief. "I was always thinking of going back to the editorial side of the business." Within two weeks, the sale had been made to the magazine's new adoptive mother, and changes are already afoot.
