How To Pitch: Islands

This vacation lover's mag is looking for pitches on coastal destinations.

By Dana Robinson - September 15, 2015
The information in this article is current and accurate.

Circulation: 125,000
Frequency: Eight issues a year
Special issues: The "Caribbean Travel + Life" issues are published twice a year (summer and winter) and focus exclusively on the Caribbean.

Background: Crammed with pictures of exotic island retreats that faintly whisper a distinct don't-you-wish-you-were-here siren song, Islands magazine has been helping travelers select the perfect vacation destination since 1981. The publication remained in the hands of its founding organization, Islands Publishing, until it was acquired by Bonnier Corporation (then World Publications) in 2004.

Leisure travelers make up the primary audience of Islands, and the magazine has recently altered its focus to better serve those readers. In addition to information about the latest resorts and cruise lines, the editors are now striving to put the information in a broader context to help explain why you should travel to these exotic locals, when you should go and how you should get there. The information is also being presented in a more timely fashion to give readers an opportunity to plan their trips. "The idea is that you pick [the magazine] up and you can use it to plan [travel] all over the world... any time of year," says editorial director, travel group, Jennifer Ceaser. "We're trying to make it something that's really usable, as opposed to just a bunch of pretty pictures."
