Gore to Korea for Reporters' Freedom?Multiple sources are reporting that former Vice President Al Gore might be sent to North Korea to negotiate the release of jailed journalists Laura Ling and Euana Lee of Current TV. Gore is one of Current TV's founders. Ling and Lee were arrested March 17 near the North Korean border on charges of illegal entry in to the country and engagement in "hostile acts." State Department spokesman Ian Kelly declined to comment on the possibility of Gore's deployment, though neither did he refute the rumor. "It's a very, very sensitive issue, I'm not going to go into it," Kelly told reporters. "This is such a sensitive issue, I'm just not going to go into those kinds of discussions that (Gore and the government) may or may not have had. The bottom line is that these two young women should be released but I'm not going to go into any kind of details on what we will or won't do." North Korea offered no comment Friday about the jailed journalists' fate. Email This Post |
