La Russa Blinks, Drops Twitter Suit
Twitter 1, Stupid Lawsuits, 0. This final from San Francisco courtesy of ex-A's manager Tony La Russa (currently helming the St. Louis Cardinals), who officially dropped his lawsuit against Twitter claiming trademark infringement and misappropriation of name and likeness -- because someone set up a phony Twitter account under his name and sent out offensive tweets. Twitter's statement at the time: La Russa's suit was an "unnecessary waste of judicial resources bordering on frivolous." After Twitter subsequently deleted the account in question, La Russa claimed that Twitter had settled with a donation to his charity. But, um . . . no. According to the Associated Press, La Russa dropped his claim in San Francisco's U.S. District Court, for which he received no compensation from the S.F.-based company.
