Q&A: Jim Louderback is the Master of Geek Broadcasting

Jim Louderback, Mediabistro Circus speaker and CEO of the awesome Internet Broadcast Network Revision 3, is a man after our own geeky hearts. Revision 3 features original online programming that celebrates the user-generated aristocracies surrounding stuff like Digg , comic books, the rocky road of internet celebrity, and pretty much everything else that causes geeky convulsions.

Revision 3 has made some big news the past couple of days. They just released their own branded video player with Miro, enabling delivery of Revision 3 shows to the desktop. And yesterday they signed a syndication deal with blip.tv, which will spread the Revision 3 goodness around the web faster than an Indiana Jones spoiler.

Mr. Louderback was kind enough to answer some questions about his business and how it fits into the future of broadcasting, as well what he enjoys watching on his four giant televisions.

You run an Internet Broadcast Network targeted at, well, geeks. So what's the geekiest thing about you?
I build my own computers, and I run four huge flat screens at home off of a single multi-switched TiVo that uses cat 5e Ethernet to route the HD video signals. Oh, I also love my Sonos home audio system.

User-generated video is: Spectacle. America's funniest home videos writ large. A precursor to story, which is what we're doing.

Where do you primarily draw your on-air talent from? We use experts, not actors, so they come from the communities we cover.

Revision3 is somewhat of a revelation in a market that's getting saturated by user-generated content. Is the demand growing for more professionally produced online video content, as on Revision3?
Absolutely. We're seeing a flight to quality, and a move from spectacle to story. Revision3 sits at that sweet spot!

I am reading that YouTube is working on improving their video quality. Is this way overdue, or not that big a deal for user-generated content?
Way overdue. Did you ever watch YouTube on a 52" flat screen? Yuck.

What's your favorite Revision3 show?
I love all my children equally. But Web Drifter and 'Lil Internet Superstar make me laugh.

What's your favorite show on "regular TV?"
Whatever show is currently "showing" a Mets or Patriots game. Also The Office.

In five years "broadcasting" will be:
Much like it is. A HUGE place for aggregating eyeballs. But its audience will be less, as more people augment their broadcast and cable consumption with targeted, niche shows delivered via the internet. And it'll be an increasingly older audience.
