Mobile Data Revenue Still RisingToday's Online Media Daily also reports that mobile data service revenue in the U.S. hit $6.4 billion in the third quarter. That's up 9.4 percent from the previous quarter, according to mobile advisory firm Chetan Sharma Consulting: "For the first nine months of 2007, mobile data revenues reached $17.7 billion, increasing 59% from the year-earlier period. Verizon led the way with $5.4 billion in mobile data sales, followed by AT&T with $4.95 billion, and Sprint at $3.7 billion." The majority of data revenues came from non-messaging applications such as mobile music and video services, the report said. Given the size of each carrier's customer base, those numbers are relatively in line with each other. At this point, carriers are offering a wide variety of subscription and a la carte mobile services, including mobile TV (both streamed and broadcast), wireless music purchases, games, ringtones, wallpapers, picture messaging, Web browsing, and SMS texting.
