Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. April Fools' Day is this week, and our lineup has events for those looking to mark the occasion with a few laughs, as well as options for folks who want to do some serious career-building and connection-making.

On Tuesday, mediabistro.com's own AgencySpy blog will host an evening of industry hobnobbing in Midtown. Another advertising expert, New York Times columnist Stuart Elliott will also make an appearance this week when he moderates Wednesday's "Who Decides the News?!" panel, sponsored by Northwestern University's Medill Club of New York. Recent layoffs notwithstanding, Google opens the doors to its New York headquarters Thursday night for BMA:FWD's B2B marketing open house, where execs from the search engine giant will talk recession strategies and show off their enviable company cafeteria.

If April Fool's Day revelry is what you're after, there should be plenty of jokes at Symphony Space's short story reading Wednesday night, featuring actors Parker Posey and Tim Blake Nelson. More laughs will ensue this weekend at Comix, when Daily Show correspondent Rob Riggle does his stand-up best both Friday and Saturday night.

New York isn't getting all the media action this week: On Monday, a gaggle of journalists will gather at the NewsVision 2009 conference in Washington, D.C., where the lineup of speakers includes NPR president and CEO Vivian Schiller, Politico editor-in-chief John Harris, and WashingtonPost.com managing editor Ju-Don Marshall Roberts

Last week, we headed up to Columbia University's Journalism school for a pair of book talks on Tuesday. The afternoon's first speaker was author Minal Hajratwala, who described how she was able to write her book Leaving India thanks to money she received from a buyout at the San Jose Mercury. Next up was Helen Benedict a J-school professor whose book The Lonely Soldier chronicles the "the private war of women serving in Iraq." According to Benedict, "statistics show that 30 percent of the women in the military are raped, 71 percent are sexually assaulted, and 90 percent are sexually harassed." These statistics are even more alarming since even the Department of Defense acknowledges that the vast majority of sexual assaults which take place within the military go unreported.

On Wednesday, AdAge held a "This Sucks. Let's Play" bar night for recession-weary media professionals. The party was supposed to have an advertising trivia game, according to AgencySpy, but editor Jonah Bloom apparently cancelled the quiz show "due to alcoholism of attendees" fueled by the evening's open bar. Sure it wasn't the soft turnout, Jonah?

We'll be back next Monday to forecast which upcoming media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at the prior week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Seattle, Toronto, and on the West Coast...
