December's 'Media Meshing' To Be The Last
Click here to receive The Press List via email | Submit Your Event | Advertise
Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Most folks took time off last week for Turkey Day feasting, but now that the Thanksgiving holiday is over, the media party schedule's back in full swing. We've got details on several early holiday parties and year-end awards ceremonies along with the best readings, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for the week ahead.
For media mavens, this week's biggest event is bound to be the Magazine Editors' Conversation with Ken Auletta featuring a trio of editors-in-chief that includes Vogue's Anna Wintour, Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter, and The New Yorker's David Remnick. Perhaps fashion expert Wintour can help Carter tame his famously unruly coif between questions about her rumored departure from Vogue...
Another hot ticket is Friday's Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Awards ceremony. We spotted a pair of passes for the star-studded bash going for $300 each on Craigslist.
One party that won't be happening this week is the monthly Media Meshing shindig. Gawker.com video editor Richard Blakeley postponed the party to next week to accomodate holiday hangovers, but he exclusively told The Press List that December's Meshing will be the last. Blakeley says he's doing away with the popular event because the economic crisis has left many media people unemployed and, "it seems kind of rude to be getting trashed when people are without jobs." Recessionary woes may have put the kibosh on Blakeley's partying for now, but he also told us to "keep an eye out in the spring -- I'm definitely looking to put together some events for people in the biz." In the meantime, expect the final Media Meshing to be an even more packed house than usual. Past Meshings have drawn hundreds of guests, including Nick Denton, New York Times television columnist Brian Stelter, woman-about-town Julia Allison, and Tumblr.com founder David Karp.
Hurling ourselves back into the media party circuit has left us needing a stiff drink more than ever, so we'll be back next Monday to forecast which media events you won't want to miss, along with what went down at this week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Atlanta, San Francisco, and across the pond in London...
