Eggnog And Unemployment At Early Holiday Parties

Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. December has started off with lots of layoffs, but the bad jobs news isn't stopping the media industry from celebrating the holiday season. This week's calendar features seasonal media festivities hosted by the American Society of Magazine Editors, the New York Press Club Foundation, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and American Business Media. Expect plenty of eggnog and economic crisis war stories at all of these events.
Literature buffs and publishing professionals will be especially busy this week. There are several readings and book parties in our listings, including events for RED the Book, Mad Hatters' Review, and Michael Wolff's biography of Rupert Murdoch, The Man Who Owns The News. Also on schedule for this week are the several networking opportunities and the final installment of the monthly Media Meshing event.
Last Wednesday, Anna Wintour, Graydon Carter, and David Remnick at the Newhouse Panel at The Plaza where Wintour assured the audience that she's not doomed at Vogue and magazines aren't doomed in general. Friday evening, we went to the Young Manhattanite party at old-school blogger hangout bar The Magician. Among all the Tumblr devotees, we saw Rex Sorgatz, CNet's Caroline McCarthy, and ex-Radar Online executive editor Alex Balk. We hear Balk's been taken on a tour of the offices of The Daily Beast. Stay tuned to see if he ends up writing for them sometime soon.
Recently laid-off Gawker writer Sheila McClear was also in attendance at the YM bash, and we chatted about all the attention her underwear has been getting lately. Speaking of Gawker, we also overheard that they plan on having a "celebrity intern" stop by on Wednesday. Of course, we also saw Young Manhattanite mastermind Andrew Krucoff in the crowd. Krucoff said that, despite the success of this latest party, he has no plans to pick up where Media Meshing left off by throwing regular events. Let's hope that's one promise that doesn't get kept.
We'll be back next Monday to forecast which media events you won't want to miss, along with what went down at this week's hottest (holiday) happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Cambridge, Chicago, and Los Angeles...
