Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. The spring temperatures that recently flitted across Manhattan left town this weekend, but there are plenty of events on tap for this week that'll make braving the cold worth your while.
Monday gives us Ignite NYC, an evening of networking and discussion featuring a "Know Your Meme" quiz game in which contestants will test their knowledge of viral Web phenomena. Teams for the game will feature bloggers and Web experts, including Internet entrepreneur Peter Rojas, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon co-producer Gavin Purcell, and "man-about-town" Rex Sorgatz.
On Tuesday, there will be drinks and networking aplenty on both sides of the East River. In Manhattan, mediabistro.com fetes the upcoming TVNewser summit and its new WebNewser blog with a cocktail party. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Barons will will hold their monthly meetup. Don't worry if you don't get all of the partying out of your system on Tuesday, as mediabistro.com's got another shindig Wednesday night celebrating Russ Baker's new book about the Bush dynasty, Family of Secrets. Non-New Yorkers needn't worry: mediabistro.com will also hold cocktail parties this week in Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. West Coast scribes yearning to write for TV will want to catch a reading and signing of mediabistro.com's second book, Small Screen, Big Picture, in Los Angeles on Saturday. Author and TV industry pro Chad Gervich will be on hand to tell aspiring small-screen writers everything they want to know about breaking in.
Publishing industry followers and other literati won't want to miss NYU's Festival of New French Writing where several big-name authors are slated to speak. The lineup for the festival features events with Bernard-Henri Levy, Marjane Satrapi, Chris Ware, E.L. Doctorow, The New Yorker's Adam Gopnik, and Philip Gourevitch, among others.
Since we last checked in pre-President's Day, quite a bit has gone on in the media party scene: There were plenty of events as part of Social Media Week in New York. Highlights included the Shorty Awards celebrating the best of Twitter, where MC Hammer and CNN anchor Rick Sanchez took the stage. Social Media Week came to a close with "Twestival," which drew the usual suspects, including Rachel Sklar, Nick McGlynn, who partied with dozens of others to support charity:water.
We'll be back next Monday to forecast which media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at this week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Chicago, Austin, and on the West Coast...
