Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. February is already off to a great start with a week that's absolutely packed with media events. On Tuesday, the New York County Lawyers' Association hosts a panel discussing the use of confidential sources, featuring none other than controversial former New York Times reporter Judith Miller. Miller may ring bells for media types due to her role in the "Plamegate" scandal in 2005, when she went to jail to protect a source in the Bush Administration who had given her the name of an undercover CIA agent whose husband published statements critical of the war in Iraq. Prior to "Plamegate," Miller had published a series of questionable reports in the Times that many believe exaggerated the threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. While some observers see Miller as a First Amendment hero for protecting her sources, still others view her as a shill for the Bush White House. Both her fans and her detractors will probably find plenty to debate in what she has to say on Tuesday.

There are multiple media events to choose from later this week, including a launch party for new blog TheRumpus.net, featuring James Frey, another former scandal star who made headlines after numerous inaccuracies were discovered in his 2003 memoir A Million Little Pieces. Comedy buffs will want to doublebook on Thursday, since the party for Comedy Central's new show Important Things With Demetri Martin is scheduled for the same time as the premiere party for MTV's The CollegeHumor Show. We can't help but wonder whether the overlap is coincidence or competitive maneuvering.

Last Tuesday, we went to a discussion of outsourcing in the news industry that was sponsored by the South Asian Journalists Association, The Southern Asian Institute at Columbia University, and the New York Press Club. The panel got a bit contentious, with one of the anti-outsourcing speakers describing his counterparts on the other side of the table as "Lucifer and his minions," but everyone parted ways with a handshake and the more heated moments of the discussion made it much more entertaining than most business panels. In the crowd, we spotted the New York Times' newly-appointed Mumbai business correspondent Vikas Bajaj, who was receiving many congratulations on his new gig. After the panel, we took the train to Brooklyn for the Brooklyn Barons media mixer, which was hosted by a group of ad salesmen including our good friend Jim Lehnhoff. Lehnhoff recently left Gawker Media to take a job at The Onion. Also at the party were Gawker video editor Richard Blakeley and Gawker's business development wunderkind Scott Kidder.

We'll be back next Monday to forecast which media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at this week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and on the West Coast...
