Media Panic Pandemic

Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. While concern mounts across the rest of the nation about a potential swine flu epidemic, freaking out about journalism's future still seems to be more popular here in New York than panicking over a potential pandemic. Seems we can't get through a week in this city without a panel feverishly speculating on what's next for the media industry.
If you want a break from fretting over the industry's fate, why not join mediabistro.com for a few cocktails? We're hosting parties in Boston and L.A. this week to celebrate the upcoming Mediabistro Circus June 2 and 3. Another notable event: Monday's awards ceremony for the New York Women in Communications' Matrix Awards, where presenters and honorees include NBC anchor Brian Williams, CNN's Campbell Brown, NBC Universal president and CEO Jeff Zucker, actress Julianne Moore, and writer Kurt Andersen.
NYU will be the place to be for those who aren't tired of wringing their hands about the future of the media industry: On Tuesday, the Stern School of business will hold a panel on "The NEW, New Journalism," featuring Abrams Research's Rachel Sklar, GroundReport.com CEO Rachel Sterne, and Thomson Reuters' Northeastern US bureau chief Mark Egan, and Talking Points Memo editor-at-large Matt Cooper -- who just lost his other gig as a Portfolio contributing editor when the Conde Nast business magazine folded this morning. Panelists generally blame blogs and new technology for the troubles facing traditional media outlets, but Bloomberg editor-in-chief Matt Winkler is also slated to appear, and he's said in no uncertain terms that "the enemy [is] not the computer," when it comes to the media industry's various, ahem, issues. Expect a lively debate...
Speaking of NYU and media's future, we joined Jessica Roy at a party celebrating the first anniversary of impressive student-run blog NYULocal. You may remember Roy from the stir she caused last summer when she critiqued the New York media party scene. Wonder how Roy -- who was just named NYULocal's entertainment editor -- feels about going from blog party newbie to blog party co-host... We spoke with the site's national editor Charlie Eisenhood who made headlines earlier this year when he embedded himself with protesters who took over an NYU cafteteria and liveblogged the occupation. Despite his brush with media fame, Eisenhood says he's still nervous about his job prospects after graduation. He hopes to get "a cool job in politics, or economics, or journalism," but the economics major recognizes "it's going to depend on the economy. I might stay in school." Here's hoping for his sake (and for the rest of us) that the job market is doing a lot better by 2011 when he completes his studies.
We'll be back next Monday to forecast which upcoming media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at the prior week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, Washington, D.C., and on the West Coast...
