Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Spring officially starts on Friday, and there will be plenty of conferences, panels, and networking opportunities this week to get media folks into swing for the new season.
On Wednesday, GalleyCat senior editor Ron Hogan will be at Jefferson Market Library for the Women's National Book Association panel, "Book Marketing and the Web." Publishing industry professionals and other bookish types will also appreciate the talk hosted by the Center for Communication on Thursday, where several authors including Newsweek writers Jonathan Alter and Jeremy McCarter will discuss the art of writing a biography.
Media Summit New York kicks off on Wednesday: The two-day event focused on technology, advertising and media will include appearances by BusinessWeek media columnist Jon Fine, Vanity Fair writer Michael Wolff, Associated Press managing editor Michael Oreskes, ESPN.com editor-in-chief Rob King, and MySpace.com exec Jason Kirk. This weekend, PBS host Gwen Ifill will be among those attending Harvard's Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism in Boston. If you're in the mood for a cocktail party, mediabistro.com is hosting events on both coasts this week. Join us on Monday in New York, followed by another fete in San Francisco on Thursday.
Last week, the media and technology crowd converged on Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest Interactive Festival. On the way there, Gawker video editor Richard Blakeley Twittered about spotting CNet editor Caroline McCarthy, and All Things Digital media writer Peter Kafka on his flight from New York. McCarthy also made an appearance at the festival itself in a core conversation with mediabistro.com's own Rebecca Fox and Abrams PR's Rachel Sklar that asked, "Why Is Professional Blogging Bloodsport For Women?" Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, Wired editor-in-chief Chris Anderson, FiveThirtyEight.com polling guru Nate Silver, and Garage Technology Ventures managing director Guy Kawasaki also spoke at SXSW.
After the panels and presentations, there were parties hosted by the likes of Tumblr, College Humor, and Gawker where SXSW revelers such as NonSociety.com blogger Julia Allison, writer Nick Douglas (who recently signed a deal for a book about Twitter posts), and Digg.com founder Kevin Rose marveled at the novelty of being in Texas -- while doing exactly the same things they do in New York and San Francisco.
Now that everyone's back home safe and sound, we'll be back next Monday to forecast which upcoming media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at the prior week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C....
