Is Comic Con Too Big?

comiccon01.gif This is the largest annual convention in San Diego. According to the only informative person we've encountered so far this weekend (the woman at the San Diego information desk), she said they are expecting 123,000 people at this convention. The max capacity of Petco Park is, according to their site 42,000. Comic Con is three times larger than the biggest most sold out baseball game.

"It's outgrown the center." She offered. "But it's still here until 2012. The next logical place would be in Vegas."

It's completely oversold. There are too many people here. The show room is a slow slogging sea of sweaty fan boys rubbing up against one another. It screams fire code violation. Most attendees that we talked to admitted that they spend way over half their time waiting in line. There are lines to get in panels. There are lines to get autographs. There are lines to get free stuff. There are lines to get in the showroom. There are lines to get out. There are lines to take photos. There are lines to get food. There are lines to get coffee. The only thing there's not a line for is the women's restroom.

The event doesn't fit the space. Period. There were too many tickets sold. Who's responsible for that?

Comic Con International has this on their website:

MISSION STATEMENT: Comic-Con International is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.
