Daniel Guss, eternal thorn in the paw of Animal Services, has an op-ed in the Daily News which makes a simple point about the LA Zoo's elephant exhibit:

No housing for homeless people. Forced housing for animals imported from another continent. How wrong is that?

He's right, of course. The Zoo just moved Ruby to the PAWS sanctuary, after letting school tours watch Gina and Tara die lingering deaths.

Why does LA even need a zoo? Wanna watch wildlife? Try Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan.

Guess not, as the Zoo is building a $39 million, six-acre Asian elephant exhibit, Pachyderm Forest, for Billy, the one remaining elephant. The new exhibit is scheduled to open in late 2009.
