California Watch Moves In with OC Register

Tomorrow marks the official opening of a third office for California Watch, the two-year-old state-focused arm of Berkeley’s Center for Investigative Reporting. The largest investigative journalism outfit in California already has outposts in Berkeley and Sacramento.

CW’s SoCal office is located in Santa Ana, within the newsroom of the Orange County Register. Initially, the staff will consist of two talented female journos: Joanna Lin (pictured), one of the organization’s two health and welfare reporters, and Ashley Alvarado, CW’s public engagement manager. There is room for visiting staffers and a future, likely 2012 intern.

“Joanna will be exploring all kinds of stories statewide,” explains California Watch editorial director Mark Katches via email to FishbowlLA. “Ashley will be traveling around the state to engage communities and make sure our stories reach new audiences. Southern California is a nice jumping off point for all of her work.”

Both SoCal office staffers are USC grads. Lin previously worked with the LA Times and Los Angeles Daily Journal, while Alvarado continues to oversee Los Cabos Magazine and was formerly at Los Angeles and Tu Ciudad Los Angeles magazines.
