How’s this for a seamless transition from entertainment journalism to the Hollywood publicity ranks?
Per an obit in The Hollywood Reporter, Dale Olson – who passed away Thursday in Burbank at age 78 after a long battle with cancer – started out in 1956 as west coast editor for Box Office magazine. Then, after moving on to Daily Variety, he segued in the mid-1960s to the Mirisch Corp.:
His first assignment was for In the Heat of the Night (1967), which won five Oscars, including Best Picture. He would head more than 150 movie campaigns, including launching the Rocky, Superman, Rambo and Halloween franchises.
Most of that work was done as head of Rogers and Cowan’s motion picture division, which Olson jumped to quickly and ran through 1985 before starting his own PR firm. RIP.
