Et Tu, Jon Stewart?
Much has been made in the media about Hillary Clinton‘s response when she was asked for her husband’s opinion during a press conference in the Congo. It was an idiotic question and her response was entirely appropriate. ‘The Daily Show’ audience broke into cheers and applause when Jon Stewart ran the clip of Clinton replying, “My husband is not the Secretary of State, I am. So you ask my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I am not going to be channeling my husband.”
But then Stewart went on to mock Secretary Clinton for her answer, and even went on to perpetuate the unconfirmed theory that the question about her husband was flubbed in translation. Like most news outlets, Stewart didn’t bother to mention the reason Clinton was in the Congo. Fortunately the AP did:
Clinton announced a new package of $17 million in American aid to respond to an epidemic of rape and other sexual crimes directed mainly at women and girls by government troops and rebel groups fighting in the region.
Her offer came after a harrowing meeting with victims of violent gang rapes in a crowded refugee camp on the outskirts of Goma where 18,000 men, women and children have sought shelter from revenge attacks raging in the countryside.

The other, eight months pregnant at the time, lost her baby and was found by hospital workers in a forest where she had stumbled.“The atrocities that these women have suffered, and that stand for the atrocities that so many have suffered, distill evil into its basest form,” Clinton said, her voice breaking with emotion. “In the face of such evil, people of good will everywhere must respond.”
Now that’s a quote worth repeating on the evening news. If only someone had…
