Forget Barack Obama and John McCain in this topsy-turvy election year, Warner Home Video is trying to make Hollywood sit up and vote properly with its release today of “You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown.”
The new release — with all the regulars in tow like Charlie, Linus, Lucy and Snoopy — is due in stores today and Warner is definitely trying to tap into that nationwide election spirit. Well, they’re willing to tap into that money. The new Deluxe Edition will retail for about $19.98. And considering there are 150 million potential voters out there, well you do the math.
If your kids like Charlie Brown, then Warner is sure they’ll nag you enough to buy the dang thing. And they may end up watching it 20 or 30 times.
Perhaps parents will consider it an insanely inexpensive civics lesson.

New-to-DVD and released just in time for the U.S. Presidential election, this all-time favorite animated television special will be available in a dazzling, newly re-mastered format along with a delightful bonus featurette and an extra, new-to-DVD episode. You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown: Deluxe Edition will retail for $19.98 SRP.
Charlie Brown for student body president! Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Doesn’t that sound exciting? Doesn’t that sound impossible? With Lucy’s polling help, good ol’ Charlie Brown realizes he doesn’t have a chance. So he backs Linus, who runs on a pro-recess, anti-homework platform. Why, he once even shared his peanut butter sandwich with a prospective constituent. Talk about a shoo-in! Unless, of course, Linus talks about a certain Santa-like character who rises out of the pumpkin patch each Halloween, a belief sure to blow his chances with voters. Join the fun and cast your vote for You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown, hitting the campaign trail in a sparkling re-mastered deluxe edition with improved picture and audio.
“We think this is the perfect title to release now, keeping in theme with the upcoming Presidential Election,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President, Family, Animation and Sports Marketing. He added, “Viewers will enjoy the light hearted jokes about the election process. This DVD is great fun for viewers of all ages.”
DVD Special Features Include:
ü He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown – An original episode on DVD for the first time.
ü The Polls Don’t Lie: The Making of You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown – Offers viewers an in-depth look at this program, which happens to be the eighth Peanuts television special. This featurette will explore the political leanings (or lack thereof) of its producers, as well as the way in which they set out to create a politically-themed piece within the realm of Peanuts. Civic duty meets Charlie Brown!
Peanuts has a long and memorable history with elections. Charles Schulz endured twelve presidential campaigns during his 50 years of creating Peanuts, and the presidential election years of 1960, 1964, 1968, and 1990 all found the Peanuts Gang contemplating a run for office or actively involved in an election of one kind or another in the strip. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz even foresaw the excitement over the first serious female candidate—by having Lucy bemoan the fact that another woman would probably beat her to the Presidential slot before Lucy was old enough to run!
