LA Times Reporter Wins the April ‘Sidney Award’

LA Times reporter Nathaniel Popper just picked up this April’s Sidney Award for his story on Ikea’s atrocious labor practices in the United States. Popper’s story detailed Ikea’s union-busting ways, and revealed that while Swedish workers receive “$19 an hour and…five weeks of government-mandated paid vacation, at Ikea’s three-year-old factory in Danville, Virginia, full-time employees start at $8 an hour with 12 vacation days–eight of them on dates determined by the company.”

The Sidney Award is given out monthly for the best in “socially-conscious journalism.” For his efforts, Popper will be rewarded with “$500, a bottle of union-made wine, and a certificate designed especially for the Sidney by New Yorker cartoonist, Edward Sorel.”
