The LA-Miami ‘Douche’ Debate

On Friday afternoon, LA Weekly reporter Dennis Romero posed a rhetorical question that cuts to the very center of the west coast male ID: “Is Los Angeles the Douche Capital of the Nation?“ His evidence included the origins of Hollywood nightclub bottle service and the emblematic uniform of pricey Ed Hardy T-shirts.

Romero also took aim at South Beach, teasing: “Miami? Puleese. Those douches got nothing on our douches. At least they’re fit, tan and speak proper Spanish.”

That was too much for Kyle Munzenrieder, a writer for Miami sister publication The New Times. Via a same-day retort entitled “LA Thinks It’s America’s Douche Capital, Miami Begs to Differ,” he started with a playful potshot and then made his case:

It’s Friday afternoon on a particularly slow news day, a time when Village Voice Media news bloggers tend to go a bit off the reservation…You know, at least most douches in LA have some aspirations, even if they are slightly douchey aspirations… Miami douches have no such illusions about their goals in life. They moved here to just straight up douche out 24/7.

Munzenreider also threw down the trump card of “biggest douche in America” LeBron James. Hard to argue with that.
