Actor Gavin MacLeod Returns to the High Seas

Along with playing the iconic character of Captain Stubing on The Love Boat from 1977 through 1987, Gavin MacLeod has acted as a long-time spokesperson for Princess Cruises and overcome alcoholism and a divorce caused largely by his struggles with being typecast as a shipboard greeter.

The actor recently turned 80 and is going to be a part in 2012 of Princess’ first ever “World Cruise,” a 107-day endeavor that stitches together various names and itineraries for an around-the-globe package. MacLeod will be on board for the second leg of the journey, a January 28-February 10 leg that starts in San Diego and ends in Guam’s capital of Pago Pago.

Fares for the MacLeod trip start at $5,995 per person, while fees for the entire World Cruise go up to $40,000. A spokesperson for Princess Cruises tells FishbowlLA that no other Love Boat cast member has worked with the company.

We hope MacLeod won’t mind the comparison, but with other celebrity World Cruise participants to follow later in 2012 such as Tab Hunter, Leave It To Beaver alum Jerry Mathers, and silent star Harold Lloyd‘s granddaughter Suzanne, this has all the nostalgic makings of that long-rumored Love Boat movie. During his 2012 Princess stint, MacLeod will present some of his favorite episodes of the old ABC show.
