A brand new, locally-owned and locally-staffed newspaper will be coming soon to newsracks near you.
Jay Harn, former publisher at The Signal, has told SCVTalk that he’s launching a weekly newspaper called the Santa Clarita Valley Independent.
The 30-40 page weekly tabloid-style paper will feature original news, sports and entertainment stories as well as opinion pieces.
In the past few weeks, Harn, along with fellow investors Alex Schildkrit, and Greg Eichelberger (both Signal alumni) have been gauging local interest and thinking about the design, makeup and content of the new newspaper.
When launched in mid-May, the Independent will be the second newspaper launched in the Santa Clarita Valley in the last 25 years. It comes to the community as the Daily News has pretty much ended all coverage of Santa Clarita and as the Los Angeles Times continues to downsize its newsroom.
Harn worked under Scott & Ruth Newhall in the 1980s at The Signal before going on to own papers in the San Diego area. Prior to arriving at the Signal in 2007, Harn worked as publisher of the Red Bluff Daily News in Red Bluff California. SCVTalk profiled Harn here prior to his run at The Signal.
