Propsed Paycuts For 2 Northern California Papers

Union members at the San Jose Mercury News and Monterey County Herald are being asked to take a 15% pay cut by their parent company, MediaNews Group. The union website breaks down what that would mean for the workers:
The salary of veteran reporters, editors and advertising sales people earning the current scale of $1,279.51 a week would find their pay cut $383.86 every paycheck, issued every other week. The scale for experienced copy clerks, now at $598.53 a week, would be reduced $179.56 per pay check.
If you’re earning less than six hundred dollars a week, a 15% cut salary can easily break you. No word on whether the company’s CEO Dean Singleton will take any cuts in pay. In 2007, Singleton’s salary was $1.06 million, plus stock options and bonuses.
