The slogan of The Boiling Point, the student newspaper at Shalhevet High School on South Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles, is: “When we know it, you’ll know it.” So FishbowlLA assumes that as soon as a decision has been made about a certain upcoming Saturday in November, the publication will relay that information promptly.

The paper is nominated in the 2012 National Scholastic Press Association category of “Broadsheet 17 or More Pages.” Although several Shalhevet students plan to be in attendance at the November 15-18 San Antonio convention, they are not sure if they will be able to accept an award in person if they win. The Jewish Journal’s Jonah Lowenfeld explains:

The winners in all categories will be announced on November 17… The ceremony takes place on Shabbat, and the school’s rabbis hadn’t decided whether accepting an award would be appropriate.

We hope the rabbis make a day-of-rest exception in this case. The Boiling Point is up against Harvard-Westlake’s Chronicle in its category. Various other SoCal high school outlets are nominated in the newspaper bracket, while Manhattan Beach’s Mira Costa HS got a nod in the broadcast section. Good luck to all.

*Update – 09/30/12: Lowenfeld reports that Shalhevet Rabbinical authorities have granted permission to students to accept the award, should the school win on November 17. A Judaic Studies faculty member will accompany the group to San Antonio, and on that day, students will be dressed for Shabbat.
