After 15 years, TV journalist Lisa Ling no longer calls United Airlines seat 4B home. Instead, she and her husband, oncologist Paul Song, are the proud owners of one of greenest homes in Santa Monica.
Per Emily Young‘s latest entry in the LA Times ongoing “Homes of the Times” series, there’s passive cooling instead of air conditioning, a car recharging station, more than five dozen Sanyo photovoltaic panels and a unique nighttime beacon:
Take the hard-to-miss lamp out front. Scaled in proportion to the two-story facade and illuminated to glow at night like a giant paper lantern, the light is fashioned from 2,000 translucent plastic Chinese takeout containers. “It took me, my girlfriend, Lisa and Paul four days to glue them together,” architect Marco DiMaccio says.
