That’s Thomas Pynchon Talking On The “Inherent Vice” Trailer

140tompy.jpgOur sister blog GalleyCat has been pestering Penguin Press to confirm or deny the rumor that Thomas Pynchon is the narrator of the trailer for his new book. Inspired by their crusade, the Wall Street Journal enlisted the services of one Ed Primeau, a sound engineer and voice identification expert. The WSJ had Primeau compare a clip of the author’s cameo on The Simpsons with the voice from the book trailer. His findings helped break the publishing company:

Primeau’s conclusion: “Beyond a reasonable degree of professional certainty, I believe these voices were delivered by the same person.” Confronted with Primeau’s findings, Tracy Locke, a publicist at Penguin, came clean and admitted, “It is, in fact, Thomas Pynchon doing the narration.”
