Variety Breaks Toronto Film Festival Embargo

Early this morning, Variety threw a major wrench into the 10 a.m. ET press conference plans of Toronto International Film Festival artistic director Cameron Bailey:

The reason for Bailey’s disconsolate tweet is this article, written by Toronto-based freelancer Jennie Punter and originally published at 2:34 a.m. PT. The item basically steals the thunder from Bailey’s big TIFF announcement about the event’s fall 2012 line-up and had been picked up at press time by a small number of outlets including comingsoon.net and The Huffington Post.

It’s not clear whether the Punter article was published on the Variety site intentionally or by accident.* Either way, the Hollywood trade’s name this morning in Toronto is mud, with several journalists also giving the publication grief on Twitter.
