Will Ratings ‘Fix the News’?

newsratings.jpg
An organization calling itself CeaseSPIN.org has proposed a ratings system in lieu of The Fairness Doctrine redux.

A “News Quality Rating System” requires newsmakers to advise viewers about each on-air news story’s level of journalistic integrity (e.g. 5 stars, 4 stars, 3, etc.).

We like that they use Paul Moyer as an example and gave him a three. Three? KNBC-TV a three? Really? The system already seems flawed.

Anyway, a ratings system? Will that help anything? Will that stop some programs and/or channels from being called ‘news’?

Will a news quality rating system help journalistic integrity?
