Josh Stearns, an Associate Program Director at Free Press, is doing something great: He’s keeping track of all the journalists — and what they do — who have been arrested covering the various Occupy protests. As of right now there have been 23 arrested from various outlets including Vanity Fair, The New York Daily News, the Associated Press and NPR.
Stearns stated on his blog that the list is important because of its larger implications. “I’m tracking these journalist arrests because I’m concerned about the state of the First Amendment, and our willingness as a public and a democracy to defend it,” wrote Stearns. “These arrests are a symptom of a larger debate about how we understand the First Amendment in a digital age, as the institutions that traditionally embodied those freedoms shift and change.”
