5 Percent Pay Cut For MediaNews Group in Bay Area

Guild members at nine dailies in the Bay Area are taking a 5 percent pay cut effective tomorrow. The news affects 175 people.

The MediaNews Group dailies, which include the Oakland Tribune, have implemented salary cuts ranging from 2 percent to 6 percent of pay for the period beginning Oct. 12, Editor & Publisher reports.

Employees of The San Jose Mercury News, covered by a different contract, took a separate 7 percent pay cut in June.

E&P reports that the guild and the Bay Area News Guild-East Bay-covered papers met four times but couldn’t come to an agreement, so management imposed the cuts.
