Blogging For A Job: Nobody Cares About Your Personal Life
If you’re planning to get on the Intertubes to build your brand and get a job or a consulting gig, plan carefully.
First of all, data analytics company Pear Analytics has determined that 40% of Tweets are “pointless babble.” (They defined “pointless babble” as “I am eating a sandwich now” and others of that ilk.)
And Punk Rock HR answers a question from a new blogger who seems to be a little confused:
“I’m new to HR and I’m new to blogging, but I thought it would be cool to see what it was like to give it a shot and track myself through this part of my career/life.”
Laurie’s response: “Wait, buddy, are you writing a blog about yourself or about HR?
“I used to write a blog about myself. I did it for three years. Then I realized that no one cared.”
If you are absolutely hilarious and you plan to make a career out of being witty, then by all means talk about your sandwiches on Twitter, but be funny at the same time. (Warning: Humor is difficult for even professionals, especially on Twitter. Use with caution. (Double warning: The previous link is not 100% safe for work.))
But if you’re not dripping 140-character pearls of awesome, then write about what you know, or write something that will help people. And by all means, put personality and voice into it, but above all be useful.
Or so we think.
