College Grad Can’t Find Work; Sues Her Alma Mater
Trina Thompson, 27, graduated from New York’s Monroe College in April with a bachelor of business administration degree in information technology.
On July 24 she filed suit against the college because its career services office “did not help me with a full-time job placement,” CNN reports.
“They’re supposed to say, ‘I got this student, her attendance is good, her GPA is all right — can you interview this person?’ They’re not doing that,” she said.
A couple thoughts.
1) Shouldn’t she have something else going for her other than attendance and a decent GPA?
2) Should she have been trying for a job in marketing or PR, this would have possibly been a great publicity stunt—except she makes herself sound like a whiner. However, done properly, we think this could have landed someone a job.
3) Joe Grimm‘s take: “Let’s all put some more resources into career services. That means universities making sure they staff adequately there (most don’t in journalism) and let’s take some personal responsibility for finding our own jobs.”
