Media Job Boards Saw More Postings In May

Another great month for media jobs, or at least media job boards: all three of the boards we track finished the month with more job postings than they started with.’s own board finished off the month with an average of 1300 postings active at any given time, or 300 more on average than at the beginning of May.

Bookjobs and Journalismjobs both saw growth as well.

These graphs all show the last ten weeks of job board numbers for those three boards. The blue line represents the number of postings on a given day; the red is a seven-day average meant to smooth out weekend fluctuations.

Drowning In Student Loan Debt, Man Tries To Sell His B.A. On EBay

A man listed his Purdue B.A. in psychology on eBay last week in a tongue-in-cheek attempt to pay off his student loans, reports

Nick Enlow, 29, had hoped to raise awareness of post-college debt and the value of an education after he realized that the degree hadn’t helped him land a job that would allow him to cover his $470-a-month Sallie Mae payment.

eBay decided yesterday that the listing was a ToS violation and removed it from the site, but by that time, Sallie Mae had already contacted Enlow about renegotiating his payment plan.

Which he could have done without the media stunt, but hey.

The degree was going on eBay for $36,000, with no returns.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Management Still Asking For Huge Pay Cuts

pittsburgh_post_gazette.pngContract negotiations at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, initiated in December, continue, the Tribune-Review reports.

The P-G is still asking for newsroom employees to take a 25 percent pay cut in year 1 of the contract and a 10 percent cut in year 2.

Guilds covering other parts of the paper—ten in all—also continue to negotiate.

Guilds represent 800 employees at the newspaper, or 20 percent fewer than in 2007, when the current contracts were accepted. Employees now are working under the same terms as the 2007 contracts, though those contracts technically expired March 31.

The P-G has gone through three rounds of buyouts since 2007, most recently in November 2009 when the paper offered buyouts to all 144 of its managers.

Honolulu Newspaper Unions Angry About (Lack Of) Severance Payments

All six unions representing employees at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser have filed grievances over severance pay, KITV reports.

A combined four hundred employees at both newspapers will be out of work when the papers merge in the next two weeks to become the Star-Advertiser.

But a spokesman for the Hawaii Newspaper Guild told KITV that neither the Advertiser’s former owner, Gannett Co. (GCI), or the new owner, Oahu Publications, has said whether the laid-off employees will receive severance payments.

Employees at both papers should receive one week of severance for every year of service, with five weeks minimum and 40 weeks max.

Part of the reason for the guild’s concern comes from a math problem: the guild’s calculated that Oahu Publications could owe between $12 and $14 million in severance payments, while Oahu’s own calculations put the number between $5 and $8 million.

“We’re left with the idea that maybe they don’t plan to pay it at all, and that’s why we’ve taken the legal route,” Wayne Cahill, administrative officer for the Hawaii Newspaper Guild, told KITV.

Dennis Francis, the Star-Bulletin’s publisher who will hold the same title for the combined Star-Advertiser, told KITV that he planned on paying severance after the grievance is resolved.

He also told the station that he planned on hiring just 24-34 reporters and editors for the new paper, just one third of the Advertiser’s newsroom of 120.

Job offers could begin as soon as this afternoon, Hawaii time.

Of course, the “real” ad is the postscript, and the “freelance writing” misdirection is just some clever sleight-of-hand.

Even better! The address, our reader points out, is more or less in Brooklyn Bridge Park…as in, it’s literally at the bridge.

Never has an old saw been so literally interpreted.
