Economy Added 103,000 Jobs In September, Unemployment Rate Unchanged

The U.S. economy added 103,000 jobs in September, about 40,000 more than economists had predicted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.1 percent.

The job gains are partially due to the end of the Verizon worker strike, which temporarily removed 45,000 workers from payrolls nationwide, but gains in other industries like professional and business services, health care, and construction also contributed.

The bad news: the number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more (6.2 million) grew by 200,000 over the month; there were 9.3 million underemployed workers and 2.5 million “marginally attached” workers—people who wanted to work but weren’t, but weren’t officially counted as unemployed because they hadn’t searched for work during the Labor Department’s survey period.
