Elance Introduces Work View; Ticks Off Freelancers

Many of you don’t use online bidding sites to get work, but we know some of you do, so this news item may be pertinent.

Last week, bidding site Elance introduced a program called Work View, which, similar to oDesk’s system, allows clients to view freelancers’ work by taking screenshots of their computer at random intervals.

Jennifer Mattern of Allfreelancewriting.com wrote that Elance was the only bidding site “we were willing to openly support” but that the introduction of Work View has changed that.

“The tool enables clients to cross a line. When someone chooses to hire independent contractors they have to give up certain rights — like overbearing control over the worker. In exchange they save money,” she wrote.

For Elance’s part, the company suggests that using this system—which is optional for both client and freelancer—will guarantee accuracy for the client and guarantee for the freelancer that s/he will get paid for the hours documented.

This whole thing reminds us of the old saw about the mechanic’s sign:
$25 an hour
$50 an hour if you watch
$75 an hour if you help

By the way, mediabistro.com’s Freelance Connect doesn’t allow clients to watch over your shoulder..
