Got resumes? If you’re still sending out resumes by the bundle and not getting any phone calls, it may be time to reboot your search.
Check that, it’s definitely time to reboot. Sure, we know the economy is tough and all but when your peers are getting new jobs and moving on and you’re not having as much success, it’s time to do something different.
Inspired by a piece in U.S. News & World Report, Alison Green outlined several reasons why you’re not making progress. We took the liberty of abridging them but the point is the same: If you continue to do the same things that aren’t working, you’ll continue to get the same progress. Nada.
1. Interviews. As in, are you getting them? Time to network more to get your foot in the door as well as revise your resume.
2. You’re not getting a second interview. Congrats! You’ve made it past the gatekeepers and getting a first interview, but if you’re not getting a second one (let alone a job offer), it’s time to re-evaluate your interviewing skills. If you’re at a loss, hire a coach or reach out to a mentor or two for a mock interview to be filmed so you can look back at your comments and non-verbal cues.
3. Your network. Maybe your network isn’t working. Seriously, if you keep tapping into the same people with their same contacts, new prospects aren’t going to happen overnight. Work the room, go to different events, reach out to people by asking who they know who can specifically help you. We know that looking for a job is a full-time job in itself and we’re not saying you’re not working hard, we’re just saying to think about the search from a new angle. The new game plan involves of course, bringing new people into your world!
4. You’re at a loss for the jobs to pursue. On average most job searches take six months or longer to secure a new gig but if you’re at the point where you’re not even sure what you’re qualified to do any more, employers certainly won’t be able to figure it out for you. Get focused, think about your goals, review your resume and see how it matches to job descriptions.
