Gannett To Lay Off 1,000 More?

gannett-logo.jpgGannett Blog estimates that 4,500 employees will get the axe July 8; the New York Times reports closer to 1,000. And the Wall Street Journal is saying that yes, 1,000 jobs will be eliminated, but only 600 of those will be layoffs and none of them are coming from USA Today.

600 is a lot less than 4,500, but either way, the newspaper giant cut 2,000 last winter, and even with a global workforce of more than 41,000, that’s no chump change.

The company will announce the final layoff numbers before July 8—”probably sooner,” according to execs who spoke to the NYT on condition of anonymity.

A media analyst at TampaBay.com asks, “Is there anything left to cut?”
