JOB DESCRIPTION FOR theGRIO EDITOR
TheGrio.com, a video-centric African-American news site in partnership with NBC News and msnbc.com, is seeking a certifiable news junkie with a strong interest in and knowledge of African-American culture to oversee day-to-day content publication on its breaking news platform. This editor will field a constant flurry of pitches for all of theGrio.com’s daily news content – video and text – and will be responsible for copy editing all material published on the site. Print or online news writing experience, keen news judgment and meticulous AP style skills are absolute musts – as are strong ethical standards and the ability to write creative, catchy headlines
The ideal candidate will thrive in the tight-knit team environment of a start-up news site that exists within the infrastructure of NBC News. This person will have the ability to manage and motivate a 3- to 5-person team. Professionalism, resourcefulness and flexibility are desired traits – as is a quick wit and thick skin. The perfect candidate will be always anticipating the next angle on today’s news, but he or she will also maintain a steady focus on the news that is breaking hour-by-hour. He or she will be an island of calm amidst the chaos.
An amazing work ethic and willingness to get into the weeds is a must. Bonus points if you are technically-minded with a knack for content management systems, blogging software and video production. An understanding of search engine optimization and site design is also important. This editor will be responsible for pushing the buttons and pulling the levers that make theGrio.com run.

- Determine which AP and Video on Demand stories will be published
- Determine placement of stories on site
- Proof all copy + metadata. Copy edit with AP style
- Write catchy headlines
- Send written text pitches to msnbc.com daily
