Laying Off 12 Percent Of The Staff At Houston Chronicle

hcl.jpgThe economic downturn has claimed another victim in print media. On Tuesday, Houston Chronicle‘s president and publisher, Jack Sweeney, announced that the paper would be laying off 12 percent of its employees.

“We read about companies in all business categories adjusting their size to match current and projected revenues,” Sweeney told the Chronicle. “The Houston Chronicle must do the same in spite of your diligent efforts.”

The news room will lose approximately 90 staff members. The restructure will take place under the watchful eye of editor Jeff Cohen who says the department will still be committed to strong watchdog journalism and aggressive online coverage of all the news in Houston.

The paper is offering a severance package, which will include two weeks of pay for each year of service up to one year’s pay as well as career transition services.
