Layoffs At The Houston Chronicle
Six months ago the Houston Chronicle was forced to eliminate 80 full-time employees. Publisher and President Jack Sweeney cited declining revenue and increases in print costs. Now, the Chronicle is facing an even larger reduction. In a reorganization that is set to take place over the next 60 days, the paper will shed 10 percent of its workforce.
In a letter to the company, obtained by the Houston Business Journal, Sweeny states that the company will also be looking into other cost saving initiatives. This includes combining the business, city and state sections of the newspaper into one section two days a week—the sections will return to their stand alone positions Wednesday through Sunday—and reducing the size of their classified section.
