Need a Job? Become A Ghost Twitterer

twitter.jpgThe expediential growth of Twitter&#151they increased 6.1 million in January to 9.8 million unique visitors in February&#151has made the site a media phenomenon. It’s so big even celebs are getting in on the action. You can actually subscribe to the feeds of such mega celebs as Britney Spears, 50 Cent and Kanye West to hear near constant chatter about their lives and thoughts. Okay, maybe not their thoughts.

According to a New York Times article the popularity of Twitter has created a new cottage industry for freelance writers, ghost Twitters. Now writers can get paid for penning a 140 characters post in the voice of their favorite celeb.

“Britney Spears recently advertised for someone to help, among other things, create content for Twitter and Facebook,” reports the Times. “Kanye West recently told New York magazine that he has hired two people to update his blog.”

The importance of Twitter, social networks and blogs has always been that it creates a personal connection between readers and celebrities. Is hiring a ghostwriter to maintain these pages turning these sites into just another marketing tool?

Basketball star Shaquille O’Neal thinks so, which is why he maintains is own very active Twitter account&#151boasting over 430,000 followers.

“If I am going to speak, it will come from me,” he told the Times, adding that Twitter allows him to bypass the media to speak directly to the fans.

So, if you’re looking for a new gig perhaps you should start approaching your favorite celebrities&#151even tech guru Guy Kawasaki has a ghost Twitterer&#151and offer up your services. What do you think? Is this a legitimate new form of promotion or hackneyed use of new technology?
